    About Your Instructor:

Bonnie MacDougall of Havenhoopdance, began hooping in 2002 on the Weaver St. Market lawn in Carrboro, NC one of the original “meccas” for the new wave of today’s hoop movement.  In 2009, after years of practice, play, and helping to build community, she began teaching weekly hoop dance classes, all the while weaving in well over 20 years of various instruction techniques.  Bonnie teaches at flow festivals across the region often helping establish inaugural years, travels to teach workshops, as well as perform . She also provides administrative and programming support as well as regularly facilitating Ecstatic Dance at The Flowjo, Carrboro’s movement, circus, and healing arts space.  Bonnie’s practice is nourished with meditative movement as well as technical hoop artistry, and an abundance of dance.  Her style is based on embodied movement, blurring the line between who is in “control” the hoop or the hooper.

When she isn’t hooping or dancing Bonnie teaches gynecological health and sexual health history taking to medical, PA and graduate nursing students at Duke and the University of North Carolina.  She has a background in social work, focusing on crisis intervention, domestic violence, and counseling. Bonnie strongly believes in and strives to grow in inclusivity, consent culture, and racial justice. She is the mother to two incredible boys with their own unique ways of being in the world that also teach her daily on how to be a better person.
