Join Gena for her signature Lyra workshop. Aerialists will create Lyra sequences by intertwining various skills with unique transitions. This workshop focuses on Aerial technique, creative movement and answers the classic “Where do I go from here?” questions. Lyra Flow is perfect for aerialists who are ready to create their own Lyra movement and for those who are interested in something new!
Prerequisites: must be able to mount unassisted.
About the instructor:
Gena DuBose is the Creative Director of SOAR Aerial Dance, a collective organization for movement artists based in Durham.
In 2010 Gena began practicing Aerial Arts in Asheville, NC after becoming inspired from seeing a live Trapeze duo in a unique warehouse event. From Trapeze and Silks, she moved into Lyra and fell in love with this circular apparatus. After training at Aerial Space, she moved to California where she trained at San Francisco Circus Center and Kinetic Arts in Oakland. She then moved to Orlando, FL where she trained with Jennifer Drabik at Orlando Area Arts.
In addition to her training in Florida, Gena spent her time at a flying trapeze school learning under Efe Ilkay, where he taught her how to work the board and also how to fly. This taught Gena a lot about body awareness and solidified her interest in making a career out of performing arts. While in Florida, Gena became inspired to work harder and received her Pilates training through STOTT which contributed further to her passion for learning about the body and how it moves.
Since moving to Durham in 2014, Gena has collaborated, taught, and performed with Cirque de Vol, Triangle Circus Arts, Pura Vida Studio and Durham School for Ballet. She currently resides at Aradia Fitness in Cary. Gena also completed her yoga teacher training at Franklin Street Yoga Center, specializing in power yoga. In all of her classes, Gena likes to focus on anatomy and alignment, a concept of body and spacial awareness that she brings to her teachings and performances. Specifically in Lyra classes, Gena emphasizes choreography, sequencing and lyrical flow.
